A REAL LIFE STORY
BE RESPECTFUL AND APPRECIATIVE OF OTHERS
This had happened many years ago when I was on a train journey with my wife. We had purchased first class tickets and as with other newly married couples would have appreciated some privacy. But we had an additional occupant in our compartment who was a bearded swami (Hindu saint) who looked extremely shabby. He spoke in chaste Tamil and we conversed with him in this language. However, when my wife and I had to discuss confidential issues we would switch over to English. After a short while we grew bold and started criticizing him and passing sarcastic comments in English, certain that he did not know the language.
He traveled in our compartment for the next eight hours and all along, while we were polite to him when we spoke to him in Tamil, we really teased him and made fun of him while we converse amongst ourselves in English. Just as he got down at his destination, he gifted us something wrapped in brown paper.
Only after the train started again did I open the wrapping. It was a book in English discussing Shiva worship in Dravidian Cultures. The last page showed the photograph of the author who was none else but our co-passenger. And it was modestly mentioned that the author was an MA in English Literature from the Oxford University in England.
